Special Em’s launches new video series: “Ask the Experts”

ASK THE EXPERTS
Real questions. Expert perspectives. Practical guidance for everyday life.

Some questions stay with us for a long time because we simply do not know who to ask. They may be everyday challenges around caring for, educating, and supporting children. They may be concerns about learning, work, or daily life. Or they may be moments when you realize you are feeling overwhelmed and need support, but are not sure where to start.

Ask the Experts is a video series by Special Em’s created to give those questions a place to be heard.
We invite questions from the community and work with our professional team to explore them, put them into context, and provide thoughtful, practical answers.

Through the series, Special Em’s aims to share information that is clear, evidence-informed, and relevant to everyday life — helping viewers better understand the issues they are facing, consider appropriate ways forward, and feel better equipped to support themselves and the people around them.

WHAT IS “ASK THE EXPERTS”?
Ask the Experts is a video series exploring real questions related to:
• Education and support for children with special rights.
• Learning and emotional challenges faced by school and university students.
• Mental health and well-being among parents and adults.
• Questions and concerns from teachers, caregivers, and others who work closely with these groups.

Questions are submitted directly by members of the community. For each topic, Special Em’s professional team reviews the submissions, selects relevant questions, and explores them from appropriate professional perspectives.
Our answers are presented in clear, accessible language, with practical ideas that viewers can consider in their own everyday situations.

Teachers: Teachers supporting students with different learning, communication, and inclusion needs at school.
School and University Students: Students navigating challenges related to learning, mental well-being, or their educational environment.

TOPICS CURRENTLY FEATURED

01. HELPING CHILDREN BUILD INDEPENDENCE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

From eating and personal care to safety skills, everyday routines play an important role in helping children participate more actively and independently in daily life.
In this topic, our experts explore questions such as:
• What can parents do when a child is a picky eater or accepts only a limited range of foods?
• How can families build consistent routines around sleep, hygiene, and everyday activities?
• When and how should parents begin teaching self-care skills?
• How can children learn to recognize unsafe situations and know when and how to ask for help?
• How much support should parents provide without unintentionally doing things for their child?
The goal is not to expect children to become independent overnight. It is about finding the right starting points and manageable steps that allow children to practise, participate, and gradually take on more responsibility in everyday life.

02. WHEN A CHILD WITH SPECIAL RIGHTS STARTS SCHOOL: HOW CAN FAMILIES AND TEACHERS WORK TOGETHER?
Supporting a child at school is a shared responsibility. When families, teachers, and relevant professionals communicate and work toward common goals, children are more likely to experience consistent support across home and school.
This topic looks at questions such as:
• What information should parents share with their child’s teacher?
• What can parents do when their child is struggling to keep up with the class?
• How can mainstream teachers support a child when they do not have specialized training?
• When should teachers reach out to parents or recommend additional professional support?
• How can families, teachers, and professionals align their goals and approaches when supporting a child?
Through real-life situations, our experts explore what each person can contribute, how they can work together, and how to create greater consistency between home and school.

03. WHEN CARING FOR OTHERS LEAVES YOU RUNNING ON EMPTY
When we spend much of our time caring for, supporting, and showing up for others, it can be easy to put our own well-being last.
This topic focuses on the mental health and well-being of parents, teachers, caregivers, and adults experiencing ongoing stress and pressure.
Questions include:
• How can you tell when everyday stress has become chronic stress or burnout?
• Why do parents sometimes experience persistent worry, anxiety, or guilt?
• What can you do when you find yourself becoming more irritable or losing patience with your child or students?
• How can you make time for yourself without feeling guilty or selfish?
• When might it be time to seek professional psychological support?
Taking care of yourself does not mean putting yourself before everyone else. It can be what helps you maintain the capacity to keep caring for, working with, and supporting the people who depend on you.
